Asia Pro Bono Roundtable

The recent Asia Pro Bono Roundtable made one thing clear: the conversation around legal support for civil society organisations in Asia-Pacific is evolving fast.

Advocates for International Development (A4ID) was pleased to co-organise the 2026 Q1 Asia Pro Bono Roundtable on 25 March 2026, with International Bridges to Justice, Pro Bono SG, Trustlaw and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to bring together leaders across the pro bono and legal development community to strengthen legal support for civil society in the Asia-Pacific region.

This virtual session aimed to focus on assessing the legal needs of civil society organisations (CSOs) across the region, exploring practical tools and approaches for legal needs assessments and sharing insights into the evolving pro bono landscape.

Here are three key takeaways from the event:

• Pro bono is not a “nice to have” – it is essential
  For civil society organisations, access to timely legal support can be the difference between surviving and truly driving impact. Pro bono plays a critical role in enabling CSOs to operate effectively, navigate risk, and scale their work.
• Context matters
  Legal support cannot be one-size-fits-all. To be meaningful, pro bono must be grounded in local realities and shaped by community needs and legal systems within a cultural context. The most effective partnerships are those we build with local organisations.
• This space is evolving
  The pro bono ecosystem across Asia-Pacific is evolving rapidly. Conversations are only valuable if they translate into sustained collaboration, smarter approaches, and long-term impact. The challenge now is to keep the momentum going.

• The Asia Regional Pro Bono Roundtables, launched in 2020, provide a dynamic forum dedicated to exploring innovative strategies to harness pro bono services as a means of fostering greater access to justice and strengthening the Rule of Law. A4ID is an influential member of the Asia Pro Bono Roundtable Consortium and takes an active role in organising Roundtables each year.
